MY SERATO POST

well i saw that one of my homies had problems with his Serato, and really,  who hasn't at one point or another.

since i saw the frustration, i thought i would give you my tips and troubleshooting techniques

lets start with turntables(this is for technics users only)

1. decks should not be modified. I personally dont like rca cable replacements or taking out the ground wire.  taking the center indent out of mk2s is not a big deal.

2. this is obvious, but make sure the rcas from tts are connected to the inputs and correctly put in the red and white slots, if you have an SL3 be sure they arent in the aux ins. if they are wrong, the decks may play backward.

3. the tone arm and the connection point between carts and tone arm needs to be solid. sometimes those things get rusty and crusty, so this can be a problem.

now for the computer(only speaking on apple computers)

1. make overviews for all files. just do it, no real reason not too. you can leave it goin' over nite, and if you have dual core processor, you can do 2 at once.

2. dj am mode is if you dont want those trainspotters staring at your comp all nite. some people dont mind, others get offended if you stare at all their tracks all nite.

to use this, before loading any tracks go to tap(as in where the tempo/bpm is located. tap twice, and ender djam or just am.  at the bottom it should flash 'anti trainspotter mode engaged'

R.I.P. dj AM

3. Get a keyboard cover from kbcovers.com. make your life easier and protect your keyboard area from spills. that computer is expensive homie!

4. Relative mode is generally the best way to exploit serato's many digital features. Basically, you use the deck as a controller and have all the features of a cd player ala cue points and loops. ABS is great for the guys that switched from years of vinyl and really want to use the tt for anything other than what it can do with vinyl.

NOW HIT SET UP( AT TOP OF SCREEN )

5. HARDWARE TAB -- This just the usb buffer, basically how much latency is involved in milliseconds. REMEMBER- IF YOU HAVE A PIECE OF SHIT COMPUTER, YOU CANT PUSH IT ALL THE WAY TO THE LOWEST SETTINGS WITHOUT GETTING GLITCHES AND POPS.

6. PLAYBACK
-- ONLY GOIN THROUGH THE THINGS I AM FAMILIAR WITH AND USE OR HAVE USED --

general
track end warning -- just blinks toward the end of songs
playback keys use shift - what it says, dont use it
lock playing deck - dont use it, but it can be helpful, if you do use this, you have to take the needle of the record playing before you load another track
sort cues chronologically - use it. if you put cue 2 at 3 mins and cue 5 at 3 mins, it puts it in order of time, thus switching those 2 cues. you may not want to use this for obvious reasons. i always have it on.
enable hot cues - dont use it
use auto gain - it gets everything at one level by db, i really dislike this, dont use it
hi-fi resampler - makes scratches sound better. it really does. but i dont use it, don think it really helps the sound and i personally think it sounds bad.

on song load
play from start - dont use it, some songs have big intros, so i set cues at the first beat
instant doubles - one of the biggest reasons to use a dvs, basically you set this, load one track, then load the same on the other side in int or rel mode. it will be at the same tempo in int mode, letting you use 1 deck or cdj. nice!! now, if its in rel mode it will do the same, but if your cdj or tt is at a diff tempo on the 2nd load, its gonna go to that tempo.

braking(int mode)
this only works in internal mode and  is basically how fast or slow the track starts or stops in internal mode. all the way left is instant, all the way to the right is a slow stop, like stopping a record.

audio output
mono or stereo, obviously stereo is the best, but on janky systems go with mono.

vinyl control
from this option page, i really only use the vinyl start offset. I put it at one second, just to be sure the edge of the record isnt bent or worn too much. not that big of deal to not use it.

LIBRARY
Read Itunes Library - I use this, and of course you should too if you use itunes
everything else is pretty simple

Display
maximum screen updates
this is how smooth the wav form moves. most computers can go to 60 to keep things smooth. However this and audio cache should be move to the smaller values if you have a weak computer(low ram and hd space).

Plug INs
i only use the sp 6 sample player, and dont use it that much. stay off the dj drops and airhorns unless you want to look like a dickhead.

you can get a 3rd deck if you have an sl 3 which is really cool.

if you have any other questions or probs, ill do my best to answer them.

THURS @ PM LOUNGE ++++ JINGO-ATON

Its thursday so we are back at PM Lounge for dj zoo.

Photobucket

If you don't know who Dave Nada is, hes a great producer from Washington DC. Feezyduzit promo had one of its best shows with DJ Craze and Bird Peterson (who is a kiler dj and producer as well) for the Loft's 1 year anniversary. Nada crowd surfed and danced his way to one of Dallas's best shows of 08. So earlier this year he was doing this reggaeton/cumbia thing with slowed down big room house hits. He even put out an EP for this sound on Tittsworths label, 'Riverside' being my favourite remix.

I thought of this and slowed down one of my favourite disco jams of all time Candido's 'Jingo'. This was actually a take on Nigerian drummer Olatunji's 'Jingo', which was on 1959's 'Drums of Passion'. Carlos Santana also covered this song on his first album and still plays it to this day.

from various reference sources this is what ive come up on his bio:

Candido Camero (born April 22, 1921) is a Cuban-born percussionist (mainly Conga and Bongo) who backed many Afro-Cuban and straight-ahead jazz acts starting in the 1950s. He is credited as the first person to use the congas in jazz music.

Early on he had recorded in his native Cuba with Machito. He moved to New York in 1952 and started recording with Dizzy Gillespie. During 1953-54 he was in the Billy Taylor quartet and in 1954 he performed and recorded with Stan Kenton. He also enjoyed some hits during the disco era, most notably with the Babatunde Olatunji penned track "Jingo" which he recorded for Salsoul Records, which released from his Dancin' and Prancin' album. It peaked at #55 in the UK Singles Chart in July 1981. On January 15, 2009 he was the surprise guest at Zinc, a jazz club in New York's Greenwich Village.

He was honoured with the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award in 2008.

If you are interested music listener or any form of dj, you should really check out this guys discography. I can't tell you all the secrets here(i'm sure many djs already know and respect his work), but to me the guy also nailed the deep jazzy house sound before the style existed (or house existed for that matter) on the song on 'Thousand Finger Man'. What is even kooler is that he made 'Jingo' and TFM in his fifties. Funk never dies fo' real!

Its amazing this dude is still alive and kicking(as far as i can tell).

I did an edit of this song, with some backing flavor from every reggaeton producers favorite riddim, dem bow. Most people think reggaeton is from mexico, but its roots of popularity are more in Puerto Rico. The actual drum beat is from reggae producers Steely and Clevie from Jamaica.

i call it Jingo-aton

Feezy's MIXES Wednesday

Well today is the day that i try to make a dollar outta 15 cents. Wednesdays at Candleroom have been the longest running big weekly nite in Dallas. Strangely enough, the nite started in the last week of 07 and just never really let up. While its mainly top 40 and hip hop, its been a pretty good run and some really nice people work there.

i digress.

SO i guess im putting up a mix today. this was a good mix that was done when it was still cold and rainy. Lots of good stuff on this mix from some pop indie rock(julian casablancas, empire of the sun) to the ocean blue and finishes up with one of my favourite jams from the Jam

pretty flyers huh?

Well, my friend from the blog french-express.com, leon and i have anchored the 3rd thursday of every month to do our taste of french style house and indie electro type stuff. think basslines and champagne. We have decided to call this nite Cashmere.

Photobucket

that flyer was done by the talent of mr. phillip cox(as well as the others minus the Rich medina flyer)

ALSO ON SATURDAY NITES FROM 9-12

joule pool

the pool at the joule hotel is super fly and john michael and myself will be doing fri's and sat's up there. its totally free, but i need an rsvp if you are coming, so i can make sure they let you up(unless you are staying there).

Lots of slo motion disco and deep cuts up there, so dont look for party rockers or booking your next bachelorette party.

KLEVER AND B RICH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Photobucket

b. rich Pictures, Images and Photos

This friday is Klever and B. Rich at LIZARD LOUNGE in beautiful downtown Dallas. Klever was a DMC champion 10 years ago, and still has tremendo technical skills. Honestly, i've never seen a more proficient dj with adding turntablism to an uptempo dance set.

Photobucket

this is klever in 2000

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvdikhQ50sc

klever kept up with the DMC stuff for a few years, but now does mainly dj sets and his own production/remix work. This remix is one of my favourites

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO1_54NjHmw

Now here is DJ Craze(who has also been a guest of feezyduzit promotions) and KLever at Coachella this year(and they also played last year at coachella as well). If you don't know Craze has started SLOW ROAST RECORDS(peep the killthenoise ep).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48DtbRdr-V8

heres mike b's interview with slow roast artists Craze, Klever, Kill the Noise, and 12th Planet. While the host has a couple living arrangement mixups, its highly entertaining.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqfB3CctphI

i almost forgot about the up and comer B. Rich who is short on bio, but big on production output and is on AC Slaters P.L.U.R Records(PARTY LIKE US RECORDS).

people went insane over this remix last year, and rightly so

heres a banger remix for designer drugs,
